American Version of the Eurovision Song Contest is officially coming!

Two years ago we had heard some rumors about American Song Contest during Eurovision week in Tel Aviv 2019, as of today we finally have a confirmed date for the first edition! The contest will take place during the winter months of 2021, and will feature several rounds leading to a grand final. It'll be a great chance for Eurovision fans who miss Eurovision during the winter. But from a different standpoint, this contest might damage Eurovision's culture and uniqueness.

The first news revealed by Variety then EBU made official announcement.

According to EBU The American version of the Eurovision Song Contest will, as it is currently conceived, position the artists head to head against other states’ representatives in a series of 5-10 televised Qualifier Competitions, leading to Semi-Finals and the ultimate primetime Grand Final.

“The Eurovision Song Contest’s unique legacy dates back 65 years and its worldwide popularity is still rising. It’s time for America to experience this spectacle, through its sister competition, the American Song Contest. Love of music is universal and celebration of music in different genres and styles can transcend boundaries and unite people. We are excited to have found the right partners to offer another series that our fans across the globe can fall in love with and to share this unique competition with the American people.”

says Martin Österdahl, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest.

What about the format ?

The format, as it is currently conceived, will position the artists head-to-head against 50 states’ representatives in a series of televised qualifier competitions, leading to semi-finals and the ultimate primetime Grand Finale March Madness-style. says Christer Bjorkman to Variety.

When America is more fractionalized than ever and we are dealing with so many issues that divide us, the only [thing] that truly unites us is our culture… It can unite it by celebrating its diversity, its distinctions and in pulling everyone around its love of music and its love of song.
